The Art of A Market Run; Groceries & Gold Jewelry

There’s something about a chic market run that feels almost cinematic to me. Maybe it’s the overflowing produce stands, the rows of fresh flowers, the perfectly stocked shelves of little healthy finds and specialty snacks — or maybe it’s simply the ritual of it all. Either way, wandering through a beautiful food market has genuinely become one of my favourite pastimes.

And naturally, if I’m going to spend an hour romanticizing groceries, I’m going to dress for the occasion.

To me, market style is its own category of fashion: effortless, slightly undone, practical enough to move through the day, but still intentional. It’s the kind of outfit that feels relaxed without losing the cool-girl element. Something you could wear while grabbing a smoothie, picking up fresh fruit, and somehow still looking like you have somewhere fabulous to be afterward.

For this look, I styled a fitted black tank with oversized white parachute pants and brown suede Gazelles — simple foundations with a little personality. I paired it with a faux fur shoulder bag, layered gold jewelry, and soft accessories that made the whole outfit feel elevated without trying too hard.

Before heading to one of my favourite markets in Kimberley, me and my pups were laying in an open grassy field, soaking up the spring sun and enjoying one of those slower afternoons which made this the perfect transitional outfit. It was one of those simple moments that ended up inspiring a completely separate post I wrote about how the little things are really how we fall in love with life. If you missed that journal entry, you can read it here.

So this is The Art of A Market Run, simply styled yet effortlessly cool girl. Below I’m sharing my top three trends for styling a market run and making it of course artful and aesthetic. Because even a market run deserves a look. Let’s get into it.

Because even a market run deserves a look. Let’s get into it.

Gold Layers & Everyday Jewelry

Jewelry is what transforms a simple outfit into a styled one. For market days, I love layering gold pieces that feel effortless and lived in — stacked bracelets, mixed necklaces, rings on every other finger, oversized hoops. It adds warmth and personality to even the most minimal outfit. One of my forever favourite pieces is my freshwater pearl cross necklace. It feels slightly vintage, a little romantic, and makes even a tank top feel intentional. I also love incorporating freshwater pearls into bracelets and earrings because they soften the gold and add that subtle feminine contrast. The goal is never overdone. Just collected, personal, and slightly undone in the best way. When the outfit is more simplistic I love adding in some colour in charm bracelets and necklaces through chic charms and pendants.

Relaxed Silhouettes

The easiest way to make a market outfit feel cool is through silhouettes. I almost always gravitate toward a looser pant for these kinds of days ands something snatched up top. While the pant is something relaxed, effortless, and easy to move in. In this look, I’m wearing oversized white parachute pants with cinched ankles, which give the outfit that slightly sporty, off-duty feel while still looking styled. A good baggy jean, a soft flare pant, or an oversized trouser all create that same effect. When the base of the outfit feels relaxed, everything else naturally looks more effortless too. It’s comfort — but with shape and intention.

Statement Carryalls

This might be my favourite part. Market bags are where you can really let the personality of the outfit come through. Wicker totes, mesh market bags, oversized canvas carryalls, picnic-style baskets — they all bring that romantic European market energy that makes even the most ordinary grocery run feel elevated. And then, of course, there’s the unexpected route: a statement bag. For this look, I styled a faux fur shoulder bag instead, which added texture and contrast against the more casual pieces. It made the outfit feel playful, slightly editorial, and a little less expected — which I always love. A good market bag should feel functional, but still like part of the outfit.

I truly could spend hours wandering through beautiful markets and health food stores — finding little things, picking up fresh ingredients, discovering new snacks, grabbing a smoothie, romanticizing all of it. It’s one of those small rituals that somehow makes everyday life feel more beautiful. And getting dressed for it only makes it better.
