Nelson BC Travel Guide- My top trendy picks for everything

Nelson BC is one of my favourite little cities in the valleys of the Kootenays! It happens to be my original hometown and for that, I’m so grateful because it’s an absolute hidden gem! Its views and mountain ranges are visually stunning and it feels as though your tucked deep into the crevasse of the valley encompassed by the mountains! It makes for the most remarkable location! A beautiful lake carves itself right along town, and the historical orange bridge takes you back and forth! The town itself has completely stolen my heart since being a little girl, the main street downtown is filled with unique and chic shopping which is my favourite part and we will get all into down below! I’ve gotten to know Nelson very well over the years, and I can’t wait to share my Nelson Guide with you and all my must do’s, and favourites!

Nelson BC, The Hidden Gem City in the Valley

I’ve always called Nelson the hidden little gem city! It’s always been so special to me, there’s something about it that I absolutely love! Its a cute little ski town but it also has so much character and a very unique vibe, and it’s just gorgeous! Plus the shopping is simply outstanding for a smaller town, and that’s a huge reason why I have always had so much fun here! The stunning mountain ranges and the lake that runs down through the center of the town make for the most amazing outdoor activities in the summer and winter seasons! One of my favourite memories is camping in nelson, swimming in the lake, and walking to the walk-up Dairy Queen to get a Dilly Bar… and YES the walk-up Dairy Queen is still there and it’s adorable in the summer time! There’s nothing else like it, its a must visit! Below I’ll share all the details and my favourites with you when it comes to all things food/restaurants, drinks, shopping, skiing, and my must visits whenever I come back to Nelson!

Nelson BC Travel Guide

FOOD & DRINKS NELSON BC

Nelson might be small, but its food scene is full of flavour, charm, and character. These are the spots I always find myself going back to…

Marzano

My all-time favorite in Nelson—Marzano is everything. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, it’s the kind of spot that hits every vibe perfectly. Mornings feel like you’ve stepped into a stylish Italian café—espresso in hand, sunlight pouring in, the smell of fresh pastries wafting through. By night, it transforms into the ultimate cozy dinner spot with wood-fired pizzas, rich pastas, and cocktails that are chef’s kiss. Whether it’s your first visit or your fifteenth, Marzano always feels like a treat. The food is all modern Italian. The owners/creators trained in Naples, Italy learning their pizza making process and authentic recipes under pizza legends and you can definitely tell! They focus on non-GMO, simple, and clean ingredients which is a huge bonus! The setting and environment at Marzano is incredible, it’s at the top of my list for sure every time I come back! It feels like a little slice of Europe tucked right into BC.

Kootenay Co-Op

Don’t even get me started on how in LOVE I am with the Kootenay Co-Op. It is my most treasured grocery store. It is the everything you could want and need in a health market/grocery store. They have the best produce, an amazing selection of natural groceries, snacks, drinks, ingredients, a cheese & deli section, a mini bulk barn, local meats, salad and smoothie bar the list really goes on! You MUST experience this for yourself! This is a great option for on the go meals and snacks or if you want something quick, they really have everything!

Sprout Plant Based Eatery

For something fresh and feel-good, Sprout is such a gem. It’s a smoothie and bowl bar with the prettiest, most nourishing options—think vibrant smoothie bowls, fresh juices, and wholesome ingredients that actually taste amazing. It’s the perfect stop after a morning walk or before a lake day when you want something light, healthy, and still really satisfying. Love grabbing the bowls or wraps for on the go.

PitchFork Eatery

Pitchfork Eatery is a unique restaurant in Nelson, it presets itself as a wood lined little nook with a modern feel! They focus on Farm to Table cuisine and everything is very fresh and sustainable prepared! All the ingredients and menu items are locally sourced from farmers and gardens in the Kootenay region! They have amazingly crafted cocktails, local beers and live music! In the summertime the patio is the perfect happy hour spot! We ate here this past visit, it was delicious and elevated!

Yum Son

Modern Vietnamese with a playful twist—Yum Son is vibrant, fresh, and full of flavor. Think classic dishes made cooler: I always go for the bánh mì or papaya salad, and the cocktails are so fun. The whole space feels like a trendy vietnamese getaway, right in the heart of Nelson. This spot is always a must stop for take out on a night we don’t feel like cooking or a stop for lunch!

Red Light Ramen

This one’s moody in the best way—dark, vibey, and very cool. Their ramen is rich and flavorful (the miso is my fave), and they always nail the perfect noodle texture. It’s the kind of place you duck into on a rainy evening and leave totally satisfied.

TorchLight Brewery

For something super casual but full of character, Torchlight is a must. It has that scrappy, local craft vibe—friendly, unfussy, and fun. The beers are creative (think mango or chili brews), and there’s always something going on: live music, trivia, good people.

Broken Hill

Easily one of the classic spots in town. It’s part smokehouse, part saloon, and all cool. The space is rustic-chic with great energy—dim lights, cozy booths, and a strong whiskey list. They have fun cocktails, this is always my bar stop before heading out to dine at Marzano! I love sitting at the bar here and enjoying my extra dirty Martini! Great pre-drink vibes! I will say the menu is not totally my vibe- but lots of people do enjoy the smokehouse/burger/brisket vibe!

COFFEE SHOPS NELSON BC

If there’s one thing Nelson does so well, it’s coffee. The cafés here are full of charm—each one with its own little personality, tucked into this artsy, slow-living mountain town. Whether you’re grabbing something quick before a hike or settling in for a slow morning with a book, these are my go-to spots when I need that perfect cup (and a cozy vibe to match).

Marzano (yes, again!)

Yes, Marzano makes the list twice—because their café game in the morning is just that good. Think rich espresso, buttery pastries, and that Italian café feeling where you want to linger forever. The space is bright and beautiful, and it’s the kind of place that makes your whole day feel a little more elevated.

John Ward Coffee

Right in the heart of town, John Ward is where I go when I want great latte and a chic setting and I’m on the go. It’s a little more modern and minimal, with big windows, moody lighting, and they have little healthy treats that alway hits. Their lattes are healthy and clean, and the whole vibe feels very “writer-with-a-laptop” in the best way. It’s one of my faves for sure every time!

Oso Negro Coffee House

Oso Negro is a Nelson icon. The coffee is incredible, but what really makes it special is the magical garden patio out back. It’s lush, quiet, and full of little nooks that make you want to sit and sip all morning. If you’re after a local, earthy, very Nelson vibe—this is it. They also have an amazing large selection of healthier treats and goodies!

Empire Coffee

Tucked inside the historic Hume Hotel, Empire is a total gem. It has this old-school charm meets modern espresso bar feel, and the baristas are always so lovely. Their coffee is rich and bold, and it’s one of my favorite places to sneak in for a cozy moment in the middle of a busy day.

SHOPPING & STORES IN NELSON BC

Okay—this might be my favourite, favourite, favourite thing about Nelson. The shopping here is next level. It’s not your typical mall or chain-store situation—think charming boutiques, vintage treasures, home goods with soul, and the kind of knick-knacky stores where you always find something you didn’t know you needed (but absolutely do). Whether I’m thrifting, browsing, or picking up a cute new top, I could honestly spend all day wandering these little shops. Here are the ones I never skip.

Clothes & Thrifting

Free Time -thrift

One of my favourite thrift stops in Nelson—Free Time always surprises me in the best way. It’s packed with finds if you’re willing to do a little digging, and it leans more modern than most thrift stores. I once scored the cutest baby pink Columbia fleece here for $30 (still one of my all-time fave finds). They also have amazing ski gear—think boots, jackets, snow pants, even skis—at unreal prices. And just next door? A whole second space full of vintage clothes with even more gems to uncover. Honestly, I could spend hours here.

Horse & Snake Vintage – thrift

If you’re into one-of-a-kind pieces and a little bit of drama—this place is for you. Horse & Snake has the coolest vintage selection, from unique faux furs to unexpected statement pieces. It’s the kind of shop that makes you feel like you’re on a treasure hunt every time you walk in.

Nature’s Clothing Company – thrift

A mix of comfort and cool, Nature’s leans toward ethical, practical, and West Coast–inspired pieces. It’s not thrift, but it’s full of those soft, earthy staples you’ll live in—think cozy layers, natural fabrics, and that “I live in the mountains but make it fashion” vibe.

Silver Lining Consignment -thrift

If you want consignment that feels a little more curated, Silver Lining is a must. The pieces are usually in amazing condition—stylish, clean, and totally wearable. It’s a mix of on-trend and timeless, and I’ve found everything from cute knits to classic outerwear here. Definitely a “check often” spot.

Kootenay Exchange -thrift

Okay, not technically for clothes—but this place is a vintage decor dream. Antique dishes, retro radios, old boxes, funky mirrors… it’s full of charm and so fun to browse. I always find something for my kitchen or home here that feels totally special and full of character.

Esprit de la Femme -Women’s lingerie & lounge wear

This store is such a hidden gem—I still can’t believe it’s in Nelson. Esprit de la Femme carries the most beautiful, elevated lingerie and loungewear—think luxurious custom pieces from Paris and Italy, delicate lace, silk sets, and all the romantic details. It feels like stepping into a boutique in Europe. Whether you’re shopping for yourself or a special gift, this place is magic and a must visit. The double pink doors say it all…

Vibe Apparel – Women’s clothing

The name says it all—this place has vibe. It’s a little edgy, a little boho, and full of pieces you’ll want to wear on repeat. From flowy sets to slouchy basics and unique accessories, it’s one of those stores where you just feel cool walking in. They have baggy jeans, wide leg jeans, stylish jeans… you know I love my jeans!

Woosahh – Women’s clothing

Woosahh feels like a cozy-chic dream. It’s full of soft, stretchy, loungey pieces that still feel elevated—perfect for yoga, errands, or a slow day in. Think buttery fabrics, modern neutrals, and fits that make you feel good in your skin. A definite go-to for comfy style.

Village Ski Hut – mountain style wear

More than just gear—Village Ski Hut blends sporty and stylish so well. Whether you’re hitting the slopes or just want to look like you could, they’ve got technical wear, cozy après pieces, and lots of functional fashion. Plus, their staff is super helpful if you’re needing recs for gear that actually works in the mountains.

Shoes for the Soul

If you’re looking for comfy meets cute—this is the spot. Shoes for the Soul is full of brands that get it when it comes to everyday wear. Think cozy sneakers, elevated sandals, weatherproof boots, and tons of staples you’ll actually walk in. I always find something practical and pretty.

Shoe La La

More glam, more sass—Shoe La La is where I go when I want a shoe moment. They always have statement heels, cute boots, and trendy seasonal picks. Honestly, it’s just a fun store to browse when you’re feeling a little flirty or want something bold to pair with basics.

Home & Decor Stores

Maison

Maison is effortlessly cool and beautifully curated. It leans more minimal and elevated, with a mix of home goods, kitchen pieces, apothecary items, and thoughtfully selected pieces that feel both modern and timeless. Everything in the store feels intentional, and it’s one of those places you go when you want to find something really special for your home (or yourself).

Cartolina

Cartolina is such a whimsical little gem. It’s filled with the sweetest mix of vintage-inspired finds, unique gifts, and cozy home pieces—think beautiful dishes, soft linens, and all those little details that make a space feel special. But what I love most? The cutest stuffed animals. I’m such a sucker for them, and this is one of those stores where you can’t leave without picking one up. It just feels magical in there.

Bella Flora

A hidden flower shoppe. What more could you ask for in a town? Bella Flora is one of my FAVE spots to always pop into! It’s kind of a secret to visitors but I’ll let you in on it! Head to the end of the main street (the Kootenay Co-op end) and look up and you will see a sign that says along the building that says ‘FLOWERS’ with an arrow leading to the back alley… It’s a must visit! Filled with gorgeous florals, vases, home decor and beautiful pieces you won’t want to miss!

Fun & Unique Shops

Iconic Gift Shoppe

Such a fun little stop when you’re wandering downtown. It’s full of quirky, cute, and unexpected finds—everything from an entire wall of sunglasses to unique vintage finds and little trinkets. It’s one of those stores where you always end up picking something up, even if you didn’t plan to.

Loot

LOOT is such a fun, colourful little gift shop right in the heart of Nelson. It’s playful, quirky, and full of personality—think unique gifts, home pieces, books, and all the cute little things you didn’t know you needed. But the real standout? Their iconic wall of socks. It’s filled with the funniest, coolest, most random vintage-looking socks, and it honestly stops you in your tracks. It’s one of those stores you go into just to browse and end up leaving with something every time.

OUTDOORS, EXPLORING & ENJOYING NELSON BC

Nelson is such an outdoorsy little town, and that’s a huge part of its charm. There’s so much to do no matter the season—warm, lake-filled summers and cozy, snow-covered winters—but summer here is especially dreamy. Whether you’re looking to relax or explore, these are some of my favorite ways to experience the outdoors in Nelson.

Skiing at Whitewater

In the winter, skiing at Whitewater is a must. It’s smaller and more low-key than big resorts, which honestly makes it even better. It feels local, cozy, and a little hidden—like a chic little ski hill tucked into the mountains.

Enjoy the Beautiful Waterfront & Lake

In the summer, the Nelson waterfront is so beautiful. The lake, the mountains, the energy—it’s the perfect place to spend a slow afternoon. You can walk along the water, sit on the beach, or just take it all in. There’s also a fun little walk-up spot where you can grab fries and drinks, which makes it feel extra nostalgic and summery.

Visit the Iconic Dairy Queen

You have to go to the Dairy Queen in Nelson—it’s such a core experience. It’s a tiny walk-up stand (no drive-thru, no indoor seating), and it’s honestly the cutest thing ever. I grew up going here every summer, and it just feels so nostalgic. Something about grabbing a cone and walking by the lake… it’s a must.

Hiking/Mountain Biking

When the snow melts, Nelson turns into a dream for hiking and biking. There are trails everywhere, and the views are always worth it. Whether you’re going for something easy or a full adventure, it’s one of the best ways to experience the area.

Camping

Camping is such a big part of the Nelson experience for me, I grew up camping across the orange bridge every summer! There are so many beautiful spots around the lake and in the mountains, and it’s the perfect way to really slow down and soak everything in.

Ainsworth Hot Springs

A little drive from Nelson, but so worth it. Ainsworth Hot Springs is one of the most relaxing experiences—natural hot pools tucked into the mountains, with a cave you can actually swim through. It’s warm, calming, and feels like a full reset.

Enjoy the Mountain Views

One of my favourite, slower moments in Nelson is just taking in the mountain views. The town is tucked right into the valley, and it’s honestly so stunning—especially at sunrise. I love waking up early, baking a batch of my sourdough cinnamon rolls, and just enjoying the quiet with the light pouring in over the mountains. It’s simple, but it’s one of those little rituals that makes being here feel so special.
