I Fasted for 28 Days to Hear the Voice of God; Here’s what happened

I went ghost mode for the month of March, pushed away my plate, and sought after the Lord with all my heart so that I could hear Him clear as day with no doubt. I learned how to better hear Him, rest in Him, and steward His instructions and will for my life. I did not create content, post on social media (besides my content contracts), or even think about my business or anything other than God and His living word, it was the most transformative process I have ever been through. My flesh died as my spirit came alive. My flesh screamed at me, as my spirit became pleased with me.

When you remove food from your day and those moments of quick dopamine you begin to see that nothing and I mean nothing, will ever fill you up like the love and word of God. Nothing will ever compare to the love He has for you. No person, no relationship, no designer purse, no amount of likes, comments or followers, no amount of money in your bank account. These things are vanishing, fleeting, a wordly rush that only ever leaves you feeling more empty than how you started. But His love, His faithfulness remains for eternity.

When you fast your killing your flesh, because if you didn’t know already, your flesh lies to you every. single. day. You know when you begin to get really hangry and those feelings of reactivity, frustration, emotional dis-regulation start to manifest it’s actually your flesh responding and I can almost guarantee you that when you get hangry it’s not the only place those responses show up. How you are in one area is how you are in every area of your life. I wanted to kill those parts of me, kill the parts of self-sabotage, kill the emotional disregulation, kill the irritability, kill the frustration. As your flesh dies, your spirit comes alive. Your spirit can only have room to speak to you when you silence your flesh with intention. Lots of us think we are hearing from our spirits but it’s actually our flesh, take away food and you will begin to see. Fasting breaks off the chain of strongholds out of our lives, frees us from past ways, and renews us in the image of God (Isaiah 58). When you fast with Him, He works on you. He will speak to you, I promise. He spoke to me more than he ever has, in ways I will never forget.

When you’re fasting, your spiritual senses will heighten and you’ll hear God clearly because you have removed the satisfaction of your flesh. That is what I desired, I wanted my flesh to be silenced so I could hear God so clearly and not miss what he was telling me on some matters in my life. A lot of people think they hear from God, but they don’t because there are so many voices in their minds, I’ve been there. Fasting is crucial when you want to deepen your walk with God and with your faith. I know Him in a way I didn’t before, my life and my will is His, I don’t want or need anything that is not a part of His plans for me. Your flesh loves to tell you otherwise…

Here are 12 things that God showed me that I think are so important in our walk with Him. Whether you know God or not, He knows you, He loves you, these lessons can be applied no matter where your at in your walk with Him.

I fasted to Hear the Voice of God; 12 Things God Told me

1. Never seek revenge. Even in the smallest ways. Never try to hurt someone back, even in those little subconscious ways we all do. Vengeance is the Lords. He is the balancer of the scales. Trust me when I say this; He doesn’t play around with His daughters. He is the best Father to His daughters. When you reside in Him, whoever hurts you, it hurts Him. He will take care of it. He will use that pain & hurt for your own benefit and turn it into a blessing, but only when you learn that vengeance is not ours to seek. When you seek revenge your telling him you don’t trust him enough to take care of you and what happened. What happens to those who hurt you is none of your business, bless them, and keeping going.

Scripture:

Romans 12:19
“Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.’”

Proverbs 24:29
“Do not say, ‘I’ll do to them as they have done to me…’”

Matthew 5:38–39
“You have heard… ‘eye for eye’… but I tell you, do not resist an evil person…”

2. When you seek Him, He seeks you. When you reside in Him, He resides in you. The more you seek God, the more you desire for Him to be in your life, the more He will show up for you. He has given us free will (that doesn’t mean freedom, it just means a life without God which is not good) He loves us so much that he will let us come to Him instead of forcing Himself upon our lives. Fasting is one of the main ways God becomes pleased with us because we are sacrificing our meals to seek after Him, and He in return seeks after us.

Scripture:

Psalm 14:2
“The Lord looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God.”

Jeremiah 29:13
“You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.”

James 4:8
“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”

3. The Word of God is spiritual food, it gives you life and sustains you. When you lift up a fast for God, to hear Him speak, receive confirmation, or answers, it is Him and his word that will sustain you through it. It is not by our own might. Many times during my fast I felt the presence of Him in deep revelation and the hunger vanished because His love and His living word (scripture) was filling me up. He speaks to you through his word in the bible, it will jump out at you, it is living & active.

Scripture:

Matthew 4:4
“Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

Psalm 119 105
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

Hebrews 4:12
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any double-edged sword… it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

Jeremiah 23:29
“Is not my word like fire… and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?”

Luke 24:32
‘Were not our hearts burning within us while He talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?’”

4.Pray for those who hurt you, and bless those who betray you. God says that we are to pray for our enemies. If vengeance is truly his then our job is to hold no offence and un-forgiveness in our hearts as we have handed our hurts and betrayals over to Him to take care of. Having any offence and unforgiveness in our hearts and minds is deadly, it causes DIS-EASE in the body leading to sickness and a lack of overall wellbeing. The anger and offence that you hold toward people is not hurting them, it is only slowly destroying you.

Scripture:

Matthew 5:44
“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

Luke 6:27–28
“Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.”

1 Peter 3:9
“Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing…”

Romans 12:20
“If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink…”

5. The wilderness isn’t a delay—it’s preparation for the promsie land. God has good plans for you but it is necessary that He will prepare you for it first. He will test you, work on your heart, character, and intentions so that you have the capacity to hold all His promises for you so that they don’t become idols in your life, otherwise He will take them away. The pain has a purpose, the lack you experience has a testimony. It’s all taking you into your promise land. Don’t compare your wilderness season to someones else’s, you don’t know what goes on behind close doors or how they truly got there. There is so much purpose in the preparation.

Scripture:

Deuteronomy 8:2–3
“Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness… to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart…”

Deuteronomy 8:16
“…to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you.”

James 1:2–4
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete…”

Romans 5:3–4
“Suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.”

6. If your identity is rooted in wordly things (followers, social media, approval of man, money, status, cars, luxury, lust etc.) it is empty and false. There will always be emptiness and sorrow that follows when we chase material things. You will never feel like it’s enough or satisfied with what you have. If your identify is not rooted in Christ and what he did for us, and if God doesn’t have your entire heart you’re giving your life and your love to something of lesser value and you will always always feel like your lacking in life. You will always be chasing fleeting happiness. Your flesh will lie, while your spirit dies. It’s not bad at all to have desires and to want nice things, but your identity and fulfillment cannot come from them. If there’s one thing God hates, it’s a prideful heart, he will turn away from you.

Scripture:

Romans 12:2
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…”

1 John 2:15–17
15 “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.”

7. God speaks. He has always spoken to His children & always will. God wants to and absolutely has the ability to speak to all of His children. He so desperately wants a relationship with you, when we ask Him to speak to us, when we open the door to Him, He will always answer us. He has to because that is what His word says. It’s not always going to be a loud external voice, for me it’s that soft quiet whisper that comes into my mind, that is why it’s so critical to gain discernment and grow in your relationship with the Lord to truly know when it is Him speaking vs our own thoughts or the enemy. That is why fasting is so important on your walk with God.

Scripture:

John 10:27
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”

John 14:26
“The Holy Spirit… will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have said to you.”

Jeremiah 33:3
“Call to Me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.”

8. Gossip & jealousy are poison. Life and death are in the power of our tongues. Our words carry SO much weight, more than you could ever realize. Word curses are very real and what we speak over ourselves and over others most definitely impacts us and shapes our realities. When we speak negatively or have negative feelings towards other we are cursing ourselves just as much as them. We reap what we sow. It might feel good in the moment to vent, gossip, complain, but has detrimental impacts on our lives. What we speak reveals what’s inside of us, and over time it either builds life or quietly destroys it.

Scripture:

James 3:14–16
“Where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.”

Proverbs 18:21
“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

Ephesians 4:29
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up…”

Proverbs 16:28
“A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends.”

Proverbs 14:30
“A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.”

9. Do something (even small) tocrucify your flesh everyday because it loves to LIE. Your flesh loves to lie to you. Following God started to look less like a feeling and more like a choice. A daily one. Scripture talks about crucifying the flesh—laying down the impulses that feel natural but don’t lead to life. I realized how often the easy choice isn’t the right one, and how growth with God usually looks like small, quiet acts of obedience no one else sees. “I can’t fast that long, it’s not healthy for me personally”, “I don’t need to workout or move my body today”, “That person really needs to change, did you see what they did”, “I’ll do it later or tomorrow”, “I don’t have the time to spend with God right now”. We need to look in the mirror and see every day the lies that our flesh tells us that keeps us stuck, comfortable, and un-convicted for our own faults. Fasting will crucify your flesh like no other. Try 24 hours to start and little by little it gets easier. You need your flesh to DIE so your spirit becomes ALIVE.

Scripture:

Galatians 5:16–17
“Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit…”

Romans 8:6–8
“The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace…”

Galatians 5:24
“Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”

10. Forgiveness no matter what is always necessary if you want God on your side. Un-forgiveness turns your heart away from God and hardens it like no other. It’s impact only effects you. God is always going to forgive us when we come to Him but in return we must forgive others because He will not hear us or bless us when we don’t. God has rules and laws, and this is one of the biggest ones that keeps people away from their blessings and joys. We are not forgiven and heard by God if we do not forgive other and ourselves.

Scripture:

Mark 11:24–25
“…when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you…”

Ephesians 4:31–32
“Get rid of all bitterness… forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Luke 17:1
“It is impossible that no offences should come…”

Matthew 6:14–15
“If you forgive other people… your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others… your Father will not forgive your sins.”

11. Everything belongs to Him, not you. He has the power to give us all of our hearts desires (that he placed there) and to bless us hugely. He wants to. But until we understand that HE gets the glory, and that HE is the promise giver we will never receive them, because God does not want us to allow these things to become more important than He is to us. He might give things to you before your ready just to take them away to teach you a lesson if your don’t understand this principal that everything belongs to Him. We take nothing with us on out way out.

Scripture:

Matthew 6:33
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

James 1:17
“Every good and perfect gift is from above…”

Psalm 37 4
“Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.”

James 4:3
“You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives…”

Matthew 6:24
“You cannot serve both God and money.”

12. Faith is necessary to please God, and it won’t always look and feel good. On your walk with God there will be instructions that He gives you that make no sense, there will be promises He gives you that seem impossible based on what you see. This is how He works, this is how He deepens his relationship with you. He will give you little bits at a time so that He can trust you, and you begin to trust Him. One of the biggest lessons and revelations I learned on my 28 day fast was that the faith God is asking you to have makes no sense to our logical minds, He wants it that way so He gets all the glory when it comes to pass. Faith is the necessary ingredient when we are in relationship with God, it is impossible to have a relationship with Him without it. His workings in our lives are dead without faith in Him & His words.

Scripture:

Hebrews 11:1
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”

Hebrews 11:6
“Without faith it is impossible to please God. For whoever would draw near to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those that seek Him.”

James 2:17
“Faith by itself, if it does not have works is dead.”

Matthew 13:58
“He did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.”

KEYS & TIPS TO FASTING WITH GOD (my experience)

READ ISAIAH 58 BEFORE: This is the correct way to fast to please God and gives you his rules and instructions. Have clear intentions, questions, and prayers to God prior to starting.

Stay away from wordly things as much as you can during this time: shows, people, places, gossip, arguments, secular music etc. This is a time dedicated to the Lord.

Do not complain or murmur during your fast. This defeats the entire purpose of a fast. It’s your flesh dying.

Your “food” during a fast is the Word of God. Read scripture for breakfast lunch and dinner. Meditate on His words. It is what sustains you.

Prayer is key. Learn how to pray the word of God. Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you prayer/intercession/warfare.

Ask Him to speak to you, ask Him to help you hear Him better, ask Him to give you eyes to see Him and ears to hear Him.

Be in high praise, worship & thanksgiving during a fast for the things your praying and asking about, as if its already done. This is where your faith is pleasing to God and where he moves mountains for you.

God looks at your heart during a fast, it’s not about you being perfect. You will most likely mess up, ask for forgivness and keep going.

Fasting has become a regular part of my walk with God. Trust me when I say I never thought I would get here, or be able to be this type of way. My flesh told me allllll the things why fasting this long wouldn’t work for me or why it was not the right decision. Your flesh lies. Start with a 24 hour fast. Let God lead you and tell you what to do moving forward. Last week I started another 3 day fast and the Lord told me to keep going so I did. He will guide you, sustain you, speak to you and keep you. If you have any questions at all feel free to reach out as always. I hope these 12 lessons or reminders spoke to you, renewed your mind even in the smallest way, and lead you back to our one true love.

I love you so much, & He loves you even more…
