Sourdough Cinnamon Bows

I can’t believe its already December 1st…. I absolutely love December! It means snow, beautiful decorations, Christmas, cooking, baking, and slowing down! I love cooking and baking already but there is something about doing it in the month of December that just makes it extra special! I’ll be sharing quite a few recipes over this next month that are inspired by the Holiday season coming up! I can’t wait! We are starting off with one of my new favourite holiday recipes these beautiful and adorable Cinnamon Bows! I love love love bows, I always have! I love using them to wrap gifts, add detail to any decoration, and of course this goes hand in hand with Christmas! Christmas and bows is a true Christmas love story, that’s why this recipe is just darling for this upcoming Holiday season! It makes for the perfect Christmas Eve dessert or midnight snack, or a wonderful Christmas morning Brunch option! I always make a batch of my cinnamon buns on Christmas morning, so these will be a great variation to add in or swap out! I mean just look at how sweet they are, they just go perfect with Christmas time!
The dough is soft, fluffy like a pillow and so airy! The cinnamon butter is gooey and sweet and so warming with the cinnamon spice! They’re exactly like your beloved cinnamon roll, just in the shape of a lovely bow! These are not at all complicated to make and in fact they are fool proof! If you’ve ever made cinnamon buns you’ve totally got to try this and even if you haven’t you totally have to! Since I’ve been on my sourdough baking journey and I’ve learned that I can incorporate sourdough starter into pretty much any recipe, I pretty much use sourdough where ever I can! I have found it makes such a difference in how I feel after because it ferments with the flours as proofing goes on and is much better for your digestion and gut health in general! I would recommend anyone start to work with sourdough and become familiar with the process, it’s so rewarding and satisfying! Most importantly much better for your health! But do not worry if you don’t have sourdough starter, you can totally make these using any dough recipe, or your favourite cinnamon bun dough recipe and just follow along with the rest of my steps and you’ll be golden!

whole milk or almond milk

grass fed butter

brown sugar -good quality

egg

Sourdough Cinnamon Bows

Your classic take on cinnamon buns, but in the shape of darling bows just in time for the holiday season. The dough is irresistibly soft, fluffy and airy. The cinnamon sugar is perfectly sweet, buttering and just so warming. Together it makes the most wonderful addition to the Christmas morning or to celebrate the holidays

Ingredients

  • 400 grams bread flour good quality
  • 200 grams active sourdough starter
  • 150 grams organic whole milk or almond milk warm, room temp
  • 75 grams grass fed butter softened
  • 50 grams organic brown sugar
  • 1 egg room temp
  • 6 grams sea salt

Cinnamon Filling

  • 75 grams grass fed butter softened
  • 75 grams brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon

Egg Wash

  • 1 egg whisked with a splash of water

Instructions

  • Start by mixing all your dough ingredients together, adding the flour last and mix all other ingredients together before adding it in. Knead it in a stand mixer for 8-10 minutes with the hook attachment or by hand until you get a soft and smooth dough. Allow this to rise for 2-4 hours or until doubled in size
  • Make your cinnamon filling in the meantime. Add all your filling ingredients together until you get a smooth paste
  • Once your dough has doubled in size, divide it into 12 individual pieces. Roll each one out into a circle and spread the cinnamon filling evenly across. Fold the circle in half and create two slits on the folded side but not all the way to the top. Pull each side into the middle and wrap the middle piece up towards the center. (As shown in the video) repeat this for each dough ball.
  • Allow them to rise for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350.
  • Brush each bow with the egg wash (1 egg whisked with a splash of water)
  • Bake for 12 minutes, until just golden brown. Allow them to cool, then dust with powdered sugar and enjoy
