Pretty Plate, Pretty Life: A Case for Pretty Plates

A pretty plate equals a pretty life. If you know me, you know this is a saying I live by. I wholeheartedly believe that a pretty plate equals a pretty life. And no, not just because it looks aesthetic on Instagram.

I believe it because of what it represents.

In fact, the Pistachio Chocolate-Covered Dates I’m holding in these photos were originally made for one of my latest recipes on the blog. (You can find that recipe here ♡.) But somewhere between dipping dates in chocolate and arranging them on a plate, I found myself thinking about how much I love creating beautiful food experiences—not for Instagram, but for life.

To me, taking the extra minute to arrange the berries, slice the avocado perfectly, sprinkle the cinnamon, make a gorgeous sweet treat, or pull out the prettier bowl is about so much more than food. It’s about slowing down long enough to appreciate what we’ve been given and the nourishment that food gives us.

It’s about gratitude, savouring every moment of the details food offers us right down to how it looks on the plate. To me, this is a form of worship and thanksgiving to God.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.
— 1 Corinthians 10:31

Taste and see that the Lord is good. How happy is the person who takes refuge in him!
— Psalms 34:8

When I take the extra moment to arrange my food, slice the peaches with precision, or pick the prettier plate, it reminds me that this food didn’t simply appear before me. It’s provided from my Father in heaven. It’s nourishment from Him. It’s a gift. This changes everything to how I prepare and enjoy my food.

It’s about making what we’ve made an ordinary moment feel intentional. It’s about turning nourishment into a form of art. Our God is the greatest artist there is, and this is how I love to reflect his art back to Him.

Because the truth is, most of our lives are built in small moments. Tiny moments. Moments that seem insignificant while they’re happening but, in actuality, make up the majority of our lives. That’s why when you take the time to make a pretty plate, it has a way of spilling over into the rest of your life, making that beautiful too. if you can make something as ordinary as a bowl of fruit feel beautiful, you’ll be surprised how quickly the rest of your life begins to feel that way too.

And maybe that’s the deepest reason I believe in pretty plates. Because gratitude to the Lord changes things. Over and over again throughout scripture, we see thanksgiving, praise, and remembrance leading people back into God’s presence, His provision, and His blessings over us and receiving His favour over our lives. It’s one of the reasons I believe so strongly in slowing down long enough to acknowledge what we’ve been given.

These things may seem small, but gratitude for small things has never been small in the eyes of God. To me, a pretty plate is an invitation into thanksgiving. And scripture tells us that thanksgiving isn’t just something God appreciates—it’s actually one of the ways we enter into His presence in return we have His hand over our lives and there is no greater gift than that.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name. — Psalm 100:4

One of the ways we remember where every good gift comes from. One of the ways we keep our hearts soft enough to recognize His hand in our lives.

Every good and perfect gift is from above…
— Epistle of James 1:17

So yes, I believe a pretty plate can lead to a pretty life. Not because the plate itself is magical. But because it creates an opportunity to pause, give thanks, and worship the One who provided it.

And I don’t know about you, but I’ve never regretted taking an extra moment to notice the goodness of God.

A pretty plate alone won’t change your life. But the kind of person who slows down enough to make one might. Because gratitude lives in those extra thirty seconds. And gratitude has a way of making ordinary things feel holy.

That is my case for pretty plates.
