Nelson BC Guide- My top trendy picks for everything
Nelson BC is one of my favourite little cities in the valleys of the Kootnays! It happens to be my original hometown and for that, I’m so grateful because it’s an absolute hidden gem! Its views and mountain ranges are visually stunning and it feels as though your tucked deep into the crevasse of the valley encompassed by the mountains! It makes for the most remarkable location! A beautiful lake carves itself right along town, and the historical orange bridge takes you back and forth! The town itself has completely stolen my heart since being a little girl, the main street downtown is filled with unique and chic shopping which is my favourite part and we will get all into down below! I’ve gotten to know Nelson very well over the years, and I can’t wait to share my Nelson Guide with you and all my must do’s, and favourites!
Nelson BC, the hidden gem city in the valley
I’ve always called Nelson the hidden little gem city! It’s always been so special to me, there’s something about it that I absolutely love! Its a cute little ski town but it also has so much character and a very unique vibe, and it’s just gorgeous! Plus the shopping is simply outstanding for a smaller town, and that’s a huge reason why I have always had so much fun here! The stunning mountain ranges and the lake that runs down through the center of the town make for the most amazing outdoor activities in the summer and winter seasons! One of my favourite memories is camping in nelson, swimming in the lake, and walking to the walk-up Dairy Queen to get a Dilly Bar… and YES the walk-up Dairy Queen is still there and it’s adorable in the summer time! There’s nothing else like it, its a must visit! Below I’ll share all the details and my favourites with you when it comes to all things food/restaurants, drinks, shopping, skiing, and my must visits whenever I come back to Nelson!
FOOD & DRINKS
Nelson might be small, but its food scene is full of flavour, charm, and character. These are the spots I always find myself going back to…
Marzano
My all-time favorite in Nelson—Marzano is everything. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, it’s the kind of spot that hits every vibe perfectly. Mornings feel like you’ve stepped into a stylish Italian café—espresso in hand, sunlight pouring in, the smell of fresh pastries wafting through. By night, it transforms into the ultimate cozy dinner spot with wood-fired pizzas, rich pastas, and cocktails that are chef’s kiss. Whether it’s your first visit or your fifteenth, Marzano always feels like a treat. The food is all modern Italian. The owners/creators trained in Naples, Italy learning their pizza making process and authentic recipes under pizza legends and you can definitely tell! They focus on non-GMO, simple, and clean ingredients which is a huge bonus! The setting and environment at Marzano is incredible, it’s at the top of my list for sure every time I come back! It feels like a little slice of Europe tucked right into BC.
PitchFork Eatery
Pitchfork Eatery is a unique restaurant in Nelson, it presets itself as a wood lined little nook with a modern feel! They focus on Farm to Table cuisine and everything is very fresh and sustainable prepared! All the ingredients and menu items are locally sourced from farmers and gardens in the Kootenay region! They have amazingly crafted cocktails, local beers and live music! In the summertime the patio is the perfect happy hour spot! We ate here this past visit, it was delicious and elevated!
Yum Son
Modern Vietnamese with a playful twist—Yum Son is vibrant, fresh, and full of flavor. Think classic dishes made cooler: I always go for the bánh mì or papaya salad, and the cocktails are so fun. The whole space feels like a trendy tropical getaway, right in the heart of Nelson. This spot is always a must stop for take out on a night we don’t feel like cooking or a stop for lunch!
Red Light Ramen
This one’s moody in the best way—dark, vibey, and very cool. Their ramen is rich and flavorful (the miso is my fave), and they always nail the perfect noodle texture. It’s the kind of place you duck into on a rainy evening and leave totally satisfied.
TorchLight Brewery
For something super casual but full of character, Torchlight is a must. It has that scrappy, local craft vibe—friendly, unfussy, and fun. The beers are creative (think mango or chili brews), and there’s always something going on: live music, trivia, good people.
Broken Hill
COFFEE SHOPS
Easily one of the classic spots in town. It’s part smokehouse, part saloon, and all cool. The space is rustic-chic with great energy—dim lights, cozy booths, and a strong whiskey list. They have fun cocktails, this is always my bar stop before heading out to dine at Marzano! I love sitting at the bar here and enjoying my extra dirty Martini! Great pre-drink vibes! I will say the menu is not totally my vibe- but lots of people do enjoy the smokehouse/burger/brisket vibe!
Kootney Co-Op
If there’s one thing Nelson does so well, it’s coffee. The cafés here are full of charm—each one with its own little personality, tucked into this artsy, slow-living mountain town. Whether you’re grabbing something quick before a hike or settling in for a slow morning with a book, these are my go-to spots when I need that perfect cup (and a cozy vibe to match).
Marzano (yes, again!)
Yes, Marzano makes the list twice—because their café game in the morning is just that good. Think rich espresso, buttery pastries, and that Italian café feeling where you want to linger forever. The space is bright and beautiful, and it’s the kind of place that makes your whole day feel a little more elevated.
John Ward Coffee
Right in the heart of town, John Ward is where I go when I want great coffee and a chic setting. It’s a little more modern and minimal, with big windows, moody lighting, and coffee that always hits. Their lattes are smooth and strong, and the whole vibe feels very “writer-with-a-laptop” in the best way.
Oso Negro Coffee House
Oso Negro is a Nelson icon. The coffee is incredible, but what really makes it special is the magical garden patio out back. It’s lush, quiet, and full of little nooks that make you want to sit and sip all morning. If you’re after a local, earthy, very Nelson vibe—this is it.
Empire Coffee
Tucked inside the historic Hume Hotel, Empire is a total gem. It has this old-school charm meets modern espresso bar feel, and the baristas are always so lovely. Their coffee is rich and bold, and it’s one of my favorite places to sneak in for a cozy moment in the middle of a busy day.
SHOPPING
Okay—this might be my favourite, favourite, favourite thing about Nelson. The shopping here is next level. It’s not your typical mall or chain-store situation—think charming boutiques, vintage treasures, home goods with soul, and the kind of knick-knacky stores where you always find something you didn’t know you needed (but absolutely do). Whether I’m thrifting, browsing, or picking up a cute new top, I could honestly spend all day wandering these little shops. Here are the ones I never skip.
