Heart Chocolate Cake – Valentine’s Edition

This is one of my favourite chocolate cake recipes, not only because it’s chocolatey, rich, decadent, and perfectly sweet, but it’s a heart shape!! I think it makes it just that much better! Nothing says I love you like a heart shaped chocolate cake…. there’s just something about it that is so classic to Valentine’s Day and I absolutely love it! When I was planning out all my Valentine’s content the first thing that came to mind was a chocolate cake, or chocolate brownie that was decorated with dried flowers and rose petals! Then my chocolate sourdough cake recipe came to mind and I knew it had to be that, but some how in the shape of a heart! I topped it with a beautiful dark chocolate ganache which just deepens that rich flavour, its to good to be true! The perfect Valentine’s cake to say I love you! Perfect to bake for your sweet lover, a Galentines celebration, or because it’s just to pretty to not make! It turned out gorgeous…

What You’ll Need
I loveee using sourdough in any recipe I can really! It adds such an amazing depth of flavour and richness to anything you use it! It’s the natural fermentation that does that which also means great health benefits as well! Making it much easier and lighter on the digestion! The sourdough is what makes this chocolate cake so unique and extra special, but don’t worry if you don’t have any sourdough discard it will still be just as delicious just see my substitutions below in the recipe notes! Then on top a beautiful pour of dark chocolate ganache… every bite is a dream!

Making the Chocolate Cake
Start by preheating your oven to 350°. Whisk all your dry ingredients together. The secret ingredients in this sourdough chocolate cake are definitely the cinnamon, and then the hot coffee we will add in at the end. The cinnamon really adds another layer of depth to this cake and just makes it so warming and delightful! Once your dry ingredients are fully mixed set aside while we mix the wet now.
In a large bowl, start by mixing your eggs, sugars, oil, and milk together until fully mixed. Now add your sourdough starter and vanilla and mix fully again.
Add your dry ingredients to your wet and begin to fold gently together until just combined. Now add your freshly brewed hot coffee! Mix again until fully incorporated and you have a smooth batter.
Grease a bundt pan or cake pan, and pour the cake batter into the pan evenly. Place in the oven for 35 minutes -don’t go over 40 minutes! Allow it to cool for 15 minutes while we make the ganache
In a small sauce pan over low heat, begin melting your chocolate. Once fully melted, remove from the heat and add your coconut milk. Keep stirring until thick and smooth. It should still be able to run off the cake but have a more solid consistency. If its thick add a splash of milk, if its thin add a tiny bit more coconut milk. Pour the ganache over the cake, & enjoy!
