EASY SEWING DIY: Ruffle Socks

There’s something so charming about ruffled socks — soft, nostalgic, and a little bit romantic. I had a vision for a pair that felt delicate but wearable, and instead of searching for the perfect ones, I decided to make them myself. This Easy Sewing DIY is simple, beginner-friendly, and doesn’t require a pattern — just a pair of socks, some ruffle trim, and a bit of patience. Below, I’ll walk you through exactly how I made mine, so you too can have an adorable pair (or pairs 🤍) too! I’m telling you now, once you start making these it’s hard to stop… Let’s do it!

THE SKETCH & DESIGN

What You’ll Need

Ribbed crew socks (cotton or cotton-blend works best)

Ruffle trim or Lace trim – anything can work really be creative

Sewing machine & thread (easiest) or needle and thread to hand sew (time consuming but do-able)

Scissors

Pins (optional but helpful)

Step by Step: Making The DIY Ruffle Socks

For a closer look at the process, watch the full visual tutorial below so you can see exactly how the ruffle comes together.

1. Buying + Measuring the Ruffle

When measuring your ruffle, don’t just measure around the top of the sock while it’s flat. Socks stretch significantly once they’re on your leg, and you need to account for that stretch so the ruffle doesn’t pull or look sparse when worn.

Because of this, you’ll need more ruffle than you think.

My rule of thumb:
I buy 1 meter of ruffle per pair of socks, which gives enough fullness and flexibility once the sock stretches on the leg.

2. Prepare Your Sewing Machine

To sew cleanly around the sock opening, you’ll need to remove the accessory tray / extension table on your sewing machine (the removable piece that slides off the base). This exposes the free arm of the machine.

The free arm allows you to slide the sock over the base, so you can sew in a continuous circle without accidentally stitching the sock shut while having the sock stretched out so it still fits after sewing on the ruffle.

3. Position the Sock + Ruffle

Slide the sock over the free arm of the machine, right side out

Line up the ruffle with the top hem of the sock, aligning the raw edge of the ruffle with the edge of the sock cuff. You can pin lightly if needed, but I prefer to guide it as I sew.

4. Sew the Ruffle On

Using a straight stitch:

Begin sewing directly over the hem line at the top of the sock. As you sew, gently push the sock slightly to move it as you sew, letting the ruffle ease into place. Keep the ruffle relaxed — don’t stretch it, let the sock do the stretching

Because the sock is wrapped around the free arm, you’ll need to:

Sew a little, Stop, Rotate or push the sock forward, Continue sewing

This slow stop-and-go motion helps keep everything aligned and prevents puckering.

5. Finishing the Seam

When you reach the starting point:

Sew slightly past where you began so there’s no gap in the ruffle. Backstitch to secure. Trim your thread. Cut off any excess ruffle. Repeat the same process for the second sock.

Styling Notes

These ruffled socks are perfect with:

Ballet flats or Mary Janes

Loafers and a midi skirt

Cozy knits and vintage denim jorts

They’re one of those small details that instantly elevate an outfit.

This project reminded me why I love sewing — it’s slow, intentional, and incredibly rewarding and so beginner friendly. If you make your own pair, I’d love to see them. Tag me or send me a photo 🤍
