SEWING DIY: Teddy Bear Cosmetic Case

DIY Teddy Bear Cosmetic Case

DIY cosmetic case! This is probably one of my most favourite sewing DIY’s I have ever done, and I seriously can’t wait to share this with you!! I mean look how cute these teddy bear DIY cometic cases are?! Don’t they just scream fall?! Between the vanilla cream, and the cappuccino brown fabric I can’t even decide what one I love more! They’re absolutely PERFECT!! Me and my best friend Brooklynn, (who is also just as fashion obsessed as me), couldn’t stop obsessing over cute cosmetic cases so we decided we were going to design and sew a teddy bear cosmetic case and turn it into a DIY! Brooklynn went to fashion school and with all my practice with sewing and designing we knew we could pull it off, and we definitely did! We are in LOVE with them, we can’t wait to make more!!
These DIY cosmetic cases are actually more simple to make than you might think so don’t be discouraged right away!! Obviously you will need a sewing machine, but I promise you don’t have to be super skilled on the machine! The design process was really fun, and Brooklynn and myself had such a fun time brainstorming and using inspiration to help pull these DIY cosmetic cases all together! We sat down for two coconut chai lattes of course, and started looking for inspiration images, and looking at all the different kinds of shapes, and sizes to see what we wanted! We loved the idea of have having a boxy bag, that was roomy and big enough for all our essentials! Plus these bags can be used for multiple purposes so we thought the boxier the better! The shape and structure turned out so good! As for the fabric and lining we wanted it definitely to align with the fall season, so we thought what better fabric than the cozy and soft teddy bear fabric! It just screams fall and cozy sweater weather! For the inside lining we went with a soft and neutral cream waffle fabric to pull it all together! Below I’ll get into all the details, how we made it, and what you’ll need to make your very own teddy bear DIY cosmetic case! Here is the reel we put together after we made them!

MAKING THE TEDDY BEAR COSMETIC CASE

This is the video tutorial that we watched and used to make sure we sewed everything together correctly! Although the bag you see in the tutorial is different in terms of the fabric and style, the basis of the pattern and how you sew everything together worked perfectly! The only thing to note is that when dealing with the teddy bear fabric it will be quite a bit thicker under your machine than shown in the tutorial, but it still comes out great! We are going to film a tutorial showing you how to do it with the teddy bear fabric next time we make one! But for now follow along with this video, and you are good to make your very own teddy bear cosmetic case! I’ll share the steps out briefly below, but the video will make everything very clear and make a lot more sense to follow along to! Here are the steps, follow along with the tutorial video to really understand the process and steps at first!

What You’ll Need

2 x outside fabric 9 x 13.5

2 x lining fabric 9 x 13.5

2 x fleece stabilizer 9 x 13.5

14″ zipper

sewing machine & thread

MEASURE & CUT YOUR FABRIC

First you will need to measure and cut all your pieces of fabric, your outside pieces (teddy bear fabric), inside lining, and fleece stabilizer to the dimensions listed above! I made a pattern on a piece of card stock paper with those dimensions first and used that to help cut the pieces, it made the fabric come out very even and clean! I recommend making a pattern first, it makes it so much easier, and you can keep it for next time and not need to do any measuring!

SEW OR IRON ON YOUR STABILIZER

Next you will take your stabilizer and sew it to you outside lining! In the video tutorial you will see that she irons it on, but with the teddy bear fabric you won’t want to put heat on it! But if your using regular fabric you could go for the fuse-able stabilizer and just iron it on as shown in the video! You will want to sew the fleece to the inside (not the good side) of the teddy bear fabric, leaving about 1 inch around the edges!

SEW IN YOUR ZIPPER

This part you will definitely want to watch the video to make sure you don’t sew the zipper onto the wrong side! Place the zipper teeth side down on the right side of one of the outside pieces, along the 13 inch side. Then place one of your lining pieces right side down (so right sides are together) and clip lining, zipper and outside piece together using pins or clips. Sew your zipper in place going down this where you have placed your clips! Now place the zipper teeth down on the 2nd outside piece, and then place your 2nd lining right side down on top of the zipper! Making sure all the edges are lined up. Pin or clip in place, and sew the other side of the zipper in place!

make the body of the bag

Fold the pouch in half with the outside pieces touching each other on the inside and sew the bottom closed! Open your zipper about half way so you have room to flip it inside out once your done! Now match up one end of the bottom seam to the top of your zipper, the metal end piece to create a closure! Sew along this to create a seam, do it to the other side as well! You will have to go over your zipper, or get close to your zipper and then backstitch, and go to the other side! (see video tutorial)

BOX OUT YOUR BAG

We’re almost done! Now you will want to make a marking along all four of your corners on the long side down about 2 inches! Pop the corner out and line up the side seam with the marked line. Creating a triangle! Use a ruler and measure down from the top of the triangle 2 inches down, and 4 inches across! Draw a line along the 4 inch line. Repeat this on all four sides! Once you have all four corners marked, sew along the marked 4 inch line, backstitching at each one! Now trim these off leaving 1/4 inch seam allowance from your marked line! Now flip your bag right side out through the zipper you left half open and pop your corners out! Voila!! You’re very own DIY teddy bear cosmetic case!

DIY cosmetic case

I just can’t get over these, they look so chic! These cosmetic cases are truly my new favourite fall staple!! I couldn’t be happier with how they turned out! I can’t wait to make more using different colours! My next sewing project is definitely going to be a cute teddy tote!! I’ll share that with you too when I do it! I hope this inspires you to create something beautiful because it’s totally doable and so fun to hand make your own pieces! There’s just something so special about making it yourself and knowing you brought it to life!

I love you, xx
