Dressing for the in-between season is never straightforward — but it’s where styling becomes the most interesting. Right at the start of spring, when the air still carries a chill and the sun begins to soften everything, getting dressed becomes a balancing act. One moment it feels like the season has shifted, the next you’re reaching for an extra layer on your way out the door. It’s unpredictable — but that’s exactly what makes it so good and can add an element of unexpected boldness.
This is the window where winter and spring overlap, and the rules loosen. You can pull from both worlds — heavier textures with lighter silhouettes, structured layers with bare legs — creating combinations that only exist in this fleeting moment. It’s less about dressing for the weather, and more about finding that perfect line between poise and ease, polish and effortlessness.
For this look, I leaned into that in-between energy — pulling from both seasons without letting one overpower the other.
I’m wearing a lighter faux fur, slightly cropped with a longer, plush texture. It’s white with soft brown speckling — almost a subtle cow print, but more refined and tonal. I am a sucker for a good print, especially in the spring season. This look was dedicated to that. It feels like a softened version of winter’s heavier layers, which makes it perfect for this time of year.
Underneath, I kept it clean with a simple white zip-up — something easy, minimal, and fresh against the texture of the coat. I paired it with dark denim shorts to bring in that early spring, almost-summer element, and grounded the whole look with high, chunky boots — very winter-coded, but exactly what gives the outfit its contrast.
The accessories are where it all comes together. I added a slim, scalloped headband — very ‘90s — the kind that subtly pulls the hair back into soft sections without feeling too done. Paired with gold jewelry, darker sunglasses, and a faux fur leopard-print bag, it adds just enough depth and contrast to balance the lighter tones of the look.
This outfit was really about mixing textures and seasons — heavier elements like boots and faux fur with lighter, more playful pieces like shorts and a simple zip. I especially love incorporating pattern during this time of year. It lets you hold onto that richness from winter while still moving into something lighter and more effortless for spring.
I always find myself coming back to a few key styling principles during this time — pieces and pairings that make transitional dressing feel intentional, not complicated. Below is exactly how I approach it, and the elements I reach for on repeat when the season can’t quite decide but the look always hits. This is the study on spring layers.
A STUDY IN SPRING LAYERS; Printed Edition
Lightweight Layers
This is where everything starts.
Transitional dressing is defined by outerwear — but lighter, more playful versions of it. Think soft, cropped faux furs, textured trenches & jackets, and pieces that add warmth without feeling heavy. These are the layers that carry the outfit without overpowering it.
A lighter faux fur, especially in something tonal or subtly patterned, adds instant polish while still feeling seasonally appropriate. It gives you that cozy element of winter, but with a softness that leans into spring. But still carries that unexpected element when paired with the right look in this fashion season. I’ve linked some of my favourite spring season lightweight layers below.
Pairing pieces that technically belong to different seasons creates that effortless, model-off-duty feel. For me, it’s something like a high, structured boot — very winter-coded — styled with denim jorts or a lighter base. It shouldn’t make perfect sense on paper, but that’s the point. The contrast is what makes it feel styled rather than expected. It’s that push and pull between warmth and lightness that defines this time of year and really makes the look stand out as bold yet buildable. I’ve shared some of my favourite pieces to do the denim jort and high boot look with, I love the contrast.
When the season is shifting, the accessories do all the work.
This is where you can lean into slightly bolder details — sculptural jewelry, a statement headband, darker-toned accessories & sunglasses, or that plush textured handbag or tote — pieces that ground the look while still complementing the lighter elements of spring. There’s something about this season that allows for a bit more contrast. Accessories don’t have to perfectly match the mood — they just have to make sense within it. That tension is what makes the look feel complete. I still love pulling out my textured totes and handbags in this season, as well as darker shaded sunnies, and hair accessories to give it a spring forward look. Here are some elevated accents I can’t stay away from and really inspired my in-between season look.
